Are you Sun Safe?

Posted by Karen Thompson on

Summer is in full effect in Canada and we're sharing tips for individuals with dementia to stay safe in the sun.

1. Always be Prepared

Bring along a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and plenty of water wherever you go. Wear clothes that are light and comfortable. Wearing a hat is the best way to beat the heat and avoid the hot summer sun. Sunglasses with UV protection help protect your eyes from the strong UV rays. It's important to also put sunscreen on before you leave the house and reapply as needed once you're out in the sunshine. Reapplying before you might need to also helps you stay protected and decreases the risk of sunburns. Getting just one sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer.

2. Seek Shade When you Can

Finding a shady spot to sit is essential this summer. Seek out shade so that you and your loved one with dementia stay safe from the sun. While shade doesn't completely protect you from UV rays, it does protect you from the sun and is much cooler.

3. Stay Hydrated

Drink water before you feel thirsty, as thirst means you are already dehydrated. Bring along electrolyte pouches, these are tasty, help you stay hydrated and replenish your electrolytes. Read this blog post for more ways to stay hydrated this summer.

4. SPOTMYUV

SPOTMYUV is a company that sells UV detection stickers and inform you when it's time to reapply your sunscreen as it's no longer working. They are easy to use and come at a low cost. We love finding innovative ideas! Check them out here

5. Check In

It's important to take breaks from the sun and cool down. For persons living with dementia, they might not be aware of how hot they really are. It's essential to check in, ask questions, and stay proactive. Offer water before they become dehydrated, offer more sunscreen if you recognize your sunscreen is wearing off, and ensure to wear hats in the hot summer sun. Staying proactive helps you stay protected.
